AI-Assisted Education: I’m interested in exploring ways in which AI can help students in various aspects of language acquisition such as writing, error correction, creativity and critical thinking.

Film Studies: I’m looking at ways to use film clips in interactive activities in EFL classes in order to help students develop a critical perspective and personal connections to the work.

Creative Writing and Performance: Another area of interest is the use of performative techniques such as SLAM poetry and spoken-word-performance in the EFL classroom as a way of developing student confidence, creativity and engagement.

 Though I was born in the U.S., I have spent my adult life living in Australia and Japan. In addition to being a teacher, I am an indie singer-songwriter, spoken-word artist and poet. I have published two collections of poetry and written and produced work for ABC Radio National in Australia. I love expressing my writing through performance and have shared my spoken-word and poetry at festivals around the world. And finally, I love art and design and get inspired to create when I go to galleries and exhibitions.

Think of learning language as a skill, something you do, rather than something you just know. The best way to learn a skill is through practicing that skill. For example, when you learn to swim, you don’t just watch others swim or read books about swimming. You get in the pool! Be active in your approach to learning, and you will get great results!
