Lots of eyes were glued to the screen waiting for this invitation. Once the CIP sent out emails about the opportunity to take part in this traditional tea ceremony, we all typed our confirmation messages like there was no tomorrow. On the day of the event, we reached the tearoom near KSU’s pond area. The scenery alone was enough to calm one’s mind (even though there was still a strong feeling of anticipation). We were kindly invited to enter and unwind in the waiting room. After moving to the main room, we all initially felt a bit nervous about making mistakes or not following the proper etiquette, but those concerns vanished quickly because our hosts were incredibly supportive and accommodating. Not only that, but the arrangement of the room -from the hanging scroll to the flower display - created a sense of tranquility that made us appreciate the moment even more. As we went through the tea ceremony and its procedures, our hosts focused on the utensils, the traditional teaware, and their history. We were particularly fascinated by the workmanship of the natsume, the lacquered container that held the matcha powder: it displayed an interesting pattern with cucumbers painted on top, a symbol of freshness and good health. After the explanation came the real practice: the tea club members truly tested our mettle as we tried to achieve the perfect froth for our matcha. In the end, most of us managed to obtain a quite satisfying tea thanks to the instructions they gave us. It was an opportunity I would have never missed for a variety of reasons: you can learn about one of Japan’s traditional arts, you get to enter a traditional teahouse, and you get to experience real matcha. Better start training your wrist for that matcha froth!(NANNETTI Iutreさん/イタリア・シエナ外国人大学)
