Thanks to the Tea Ceremony Research Department and the CIP Office, several international students and I were given the opportunity to participate in a traditional tea ceremony in KSU’s very own tea pavilion. As the participants had different levels of Japanese language proficiency, Tomasz from Poland kindly assisted by translating the more challenging parts. We were first introduced to the proper preparation of a bowl of matcha by an experienced practitioner and were then invited to try it ourselves. Most participants were able to achieve the desired foamy consistency after a short period of practice and advice by the members of the department. We could enjoy the tea and try some delicious wagashi sweets to finish the experience. The department had taken great care in preparing a seasonal flower arrangement and a hanging scroll appropriate to the occasion. We were particularly impressed by the craftsmanship of the tea bowls and other utensils, which were explained to us in detail. Although green tea, or “matcha,” has gained significant popularity worldwide in recent years in forms of latte, or sweets, most participants were still beginners in the practice of the actual original tea ceremony. We were very glad to experience this part of lived Japanese culture thanks to our hosts. Overall, the event was very well received. However, many participants needed some time to recover from the unfamiliar seiza sitting position.(ZIZELMANN Dan Arvedさん/ドイツ・パッサウ大学)

I was really impressed by the Aikido session kindly offered by the CIP with the support of the Aikido club students. Having been born and raised practicing martial arts and combat sports, I seized the chance to try a traditional Japanese discipline as soon as I saw the opportunity.
I loved the unique atmosphere that only a dojo, with its rules and codes, can provide—from the first bow of salutation to the last. The club members were very kind and knowledgeable; they managed to teach us a lot in a very short time, making me and others want to join the club in the future.
As a Linguistics major, I also reflected on how language learning can occur in various ways outside the classroom, and how effective and permanent the positive impact of these experiences is in the long run. I would totally do it again and invite all of my international fellows to do so, even if they have never tried this type of activity or any sports before.
