研究テーマ
My research covers a wide range of areas that are actually closely linked, including:
- Examining the power of narrative in our lives (from national to individual identity, and how it affects our beliefs about ourselves, the organizations or places we live and work in and, on an individual level, in areas such as our ability to learn.)
- How people can learn English through studying content, or content-based learning (内容中心の英語教育法,) focusing in particilar on CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and EMI (English Medium Instruction) and
- How students can build self-study programs to develop their own language and academic skills as well as general knowledge, and how universities can help them through curriculum design, self-access facilities, programs in extensive reading that help build a bridge from language learning material to native speaker material, and creation of original material to facilitate this. Finally,
- How resources on the internet, apps and AI can support both teachers and learners in the above.

プロフィール
Born and raised in Australia to an American father and European mother, I started travelling at an early age and haven’t stopped since. I came to Japan more than thirty years ago just to have a look, and ended up staying. I have taught in more than 20 different institutions here, from language schools to high schools and universities. I still enjoy travelling, along with reading books and drinking good coffee when I can, and a chance to eat good food is always welcome!
学生へのメッセージ
If you want to improve your English, you need to do more than come to class and do homework. You need to make English a part of your daily life, your daily routine – watch TV series or movies in English with subtitles, read content that interests you, write a diary or find someone to write to online, listen to music, find a conversation partner... In fact, with resources like YouTube, streaming services like Netflix, translation and language learning servies and AI, you can create an environment in your home that is just like study abroad! The possibilities are endless, but it has to start with you.
