My fascination with nō theatre began in 2006 when I was conducting research for my graduation thesis on Kurosawa Akira’s film Throne of Blood, for my BA in English Literature. In 2007, I visited Japan for the first time to study nō chant and dance. After earning my PhD in 2012, I moved to Japan to continue my practice and research. In 2020, I achieved a significant milestone by becoming a licensed instructor of the Kongō school of nō. Today, I continue to research and teach nō in Kyoto, where I also perform regularly. I am also involved in numerous activities focused on the dissemination of nō, both within Japan and internationally.

2006年、英文学の学士号取得のために黒澤明監督の映画『蜘蛛巣城』についての卒業論文を研究していた時、能楽の魅力に深く引き込まれました。2007年に初めて日本を訪れ、能の謡と舞を学んだ。2012年に博士号を取得した後、日本に移り住み、稽古と研究を続けています。2020年、能楽シテ方金剛流の師範免許を取得し、大きな節目を迎えました。現在も京都で能の研究と稽古を並行して行いながら、公演にも積極的に出演しています。また、国内外を問わず、能の普及に焦点を当てた数多くの活動にも携わっています。

私は能楽の研究者であり、実践者でもあります。現在、私の研究は能楽のパフォーマンス分析、受容分析、および翻訳に焦点を当てています。また、実践コミュニティ内での伝達の問題にも関心を持っており、特に「素人」と「玄人」の関係について研究しています。

I am a scholar and practitioner of nō. Currently, my research is centered on performance analysis, audience reception, and the translation of nō works. I am also interested in the dynamics of knowledge transmission within nō communities of practice, particularly in the interactions between amateur and professional practitioners.

ペレッキアゼミでは、京都の文化を英語で研究します。そもそも「京都文化」とは何か。京都の文化のどこがユニークなのか？この文化の捉え方には、日本と海外で違いがあるのか？外国人に京都文化を伝えるにはどうしたらいいのか？京都文化を英語で説明する場合、どのようなアプローチをとるべきか？このセミでは、京都文化の伝統的な側面と現代的な側面を見ながら、これらの疑問の答えてみます。

In this seminar we research, experience, and discuss Kyoto culture in English. What is “Kyoto culture”, and what makes it unique? Are there differences in the way this culture is understood in Japan and abroad? How can we talk about Kyoto culture to a non-Japanese audience? What approach should we take when explaining Kyoto culture in English? These are some of the questions we will try to answer in this seminar by looking at traditional and contemporary aspects of Kyoto culture.

大学生になると、やっと好きなことを自由にできる時が来ます。一方、その自由を上手に使う責任を担わなければなりません。この重要な期間の内に、勉強、部活動、バイト、旅行などを幅広く、色々なことを試してほしいです。そんな経験の軸は、京都産業大学です。文化財・文化的なイベントが豊富な京都に出かけて、経験したことを授業でシェアしてもらいたいです。そして、私が研究している「能楽」は、京都の多様文化（文学、歴史、宗教、音楽、舞、工芸など）を学ぶきっかけともなります。是非、学割で鑑賞できる間、能楽堂に行ってください！

University means freedom to choose what interests one wishes to pursue. At the same time, one has responsibility for those choices. During this precious time, I encourage students to experience university classes, club activities, part-time jobs, and travels. At the core of all these experiences is Kyoto Sangyo University. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of the extraordinary number of cultural properties and events Kyoto offers, and share their experiences in class. Finally, noh theatre, which is my research field, is a medium through which it is possible to study literature, history, religion, music, dance, and crafts. I hope students will take the chance to enjoy noh performances while studying at Kyoto Sangyo University!
