Educational and Research Objectives

Master's Program

The Division of Management aims to nurture highly skilled professionals with management capabilities, through the provision of high-level management education based on the integration of various academic approaches to management for all kinds of organizations, in order to cultivate the kind of individuals described in the “school philosophy” of the university, which is, “individuals furnished with a spiritual foundation in the rich time-honored traditions of Japan have an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of both East and West and sufficient knowledge of the constantly fluctuating domestic situation, based on the ability to accurately judge situations through scientific analysis, and always adhere to their own views regardless of any pressing situations as well as stick to their own beliefs.”

Doctoral Program

The Division of Management aims to nurture individuals with management capabilities in addition to research skills and rich academic knowledge on which these are based, which are required to engage in highly skilled professional work. These are developed through high-level management education in order to cultivate the kind of individuals described in the “school philosophy” of the university, which is, “individuals furnished with a spiritual foundation in the rich time-honored traditions of Japan have an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of both East and West and sufficient knowledge of the constantly fluctuating domestic situation, based on the ability to accurately judge situations through scientific analysis, and always adhere to their own views regardless of any pressing situations and stick to their own beliefs.”

Diploma Policy

Master's Program

Based on the educational and research objectives of the Master’s Program, to ensure that students acquire the following qualities, the Division of Management confers a “master’s degree (in management)” on students who have completed the curriculum and fulfilled the completion requirements established by the program:

  1. Ability to work as highly skilled professionals based on a broad knowledge of management for all kinds of organizations and in-depth knowledge of their major field of study.
  2. At least 30 credits, including 2 credits from the core courses taught by their research supervisor, and 8 credits from advanced seminar courses.
  3. Ability to write a master’s thesis or task-oriented research report.

Doctoral Program

Based on the educational and research objectives of the Doctoral Program, to ensure that students acquire the following qualities, the Division of Management confers a “doctoral degree (in management)” on students who have completed the curriculum and fulfilled the completion requirements established by the Program:

  1. Ability to engage in work as a highly skilled professional with management capabilities.
  2. Research skills required to perform the work described in 1 above, and rich academic knowledge, which is the foundation thereof.
  3. A total of 14 credits, including 8 credits from special seminar courses and 2 credits from special research courses taught by the research supervisor, as well as four credits from special research in two elective courses.
  4. Ability to write a doctoral thesis that demonstrates advanced research ability based on a wide range of knowledge, the examination of prior research in the major field of study, creativity, logicality, and capacity to make an impact.
  5. In the oral examination, ability to demonstrate that one has acquired the research skills required to engage in work as a highly skilled professional with management capabilities and rich academic knowledge which is the foundation thereof.

Curriculum Policy

Master's Program

To achieve the goals set out in the Diploma Policy (for program completion and conferral of degrees), the Division of Management provides advanced and general seminar courses taught by faculty members specializing in students’ major fields of study, as well as courses related to the fields of strategy and organization, social management, corporate communication, and accounting and finance.
Steps are taken to optimize the curriculum by arranging courses in a way that supports the goal of integrating various academic approaches to management for all kinds of organizations and providing high-level management education based on that.

Details of the educational content, educational methods, and evaluation of learning outcomes are outlined below:

1. Educational Content
We offer special study and special seminar courses taught by faculty members specializing in students’ major fields of study as well as lecture and seminar courses in each field of strategy and organization, social management, corporate communication, and accounting and finance.

2. Educational Methods
We nurture highly skilled professionals with management capabilities through lectures and seminars in the major field of study and courses in each field of strategy and organization, social management, corporate communication, and accounting and finance.

3. Evaluation of Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes of each course are evaluated according to the methods and standards for assessing grades stipulated in the syllabus of each course.

(1) Review process of the thesis or task-oriented research report
Students’ theses reviewed by their research supervisors are assessed at the Interim Report Meeting. After that, theses or task-oriented research reports submitted by students that are deemed to meet the standards stipulated in the Diploma Policy are reviewed by the Division of Management Master’s Council and papers that pass are ultimately reviewed by the Graduate School Committee, where they are accepted or rejected.

(2) Assessment by final examination
In addition to the submission of a master’s thesis or task-oriented research report, we conduct an oral examination to assess whether students have acquired the research skills required to engage in work as a highly skilled professional with management capabilities and rich academic knowledge, which is the foundation thereof.

Doctoral Program

To achieve the goals set out in the Diploma Policy (for Program completion and conferral of degrees), we offer special research and special seminar courses taught by our research supervisors. Steps are taken to optimize the curriculum by providing research guidance under a system that is consistent across all special seminar courses taught by our research supervisors.

Details of the educational content, educational methods, and evaluation of learning outcomes are outlined below:

1. Educational Content
In addition to special seminar and special research taught by the research supervisors, research guidance is provided in special research selected by each student and guidance for preparing their dissertation.

2. Educational Methods
The Division of Management aims to nurture individuals with management capabilities who have the necessary ability to engage in highly skilled professional work and rich academic knowledge, which is the foundation thereof, through high-level management education based on research guidance and guidance provided by our Dissertation Guidance Council and sub-councils under a system that is consistent across all special seminars taught by our research supervisors.

3. Evaluation of Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes of each course are evaluated according to the methods and standards for assessing grades stipulated in the syllabus of each course.

(1) Doctoral dissertation review process
Results of dissertation guidance provided by research supervisors are improved in the Dissertation Guidance Council and sub-councils. After that, dissertations submitted by students who are deemed to meet the standards stipulated in the Diploma Policy are reviewed by the Division of Management Doctoral Council, and papers that pass are ultimately reviewed by the Graduate School Committee, where they are accepted or rejected.

(2) Assessment by final examination
In addition to the submission of the doctoral dissertation, we conduct an oral examination to assess whether students have acquired the wide-ranging knowledge of management for all kinds of organizations and in-depth knowledge of their major field of study, as well as outstanding ability as a highly skilled professional with management capabilities.

Admission Policy

Master's Program

To ensure that all students grow into highly skilled professionals with management capabilities through the two-year curriculum, the Division of Management seeks students with the following qualities:

  1. Willingness to develop more advanced management capabilities
  2. Ambition to improve one’s management abilities in various fields of society.
    Students are selected using a variety of methods that can evaluate the above requirements.
    As a characteristic entrant selection, we will have entrance examinations for working adults, international students, and the Dual-Degree Program.

Doctoral Program

To ensure that all students grow into highly skilled professionals with management capabilities through the three-year curriculum, the Division of Management seeks students with the following qualities:

Desire to further develop one’s management capabilities by acquiring more advanced specialized knowledge and insight after completing the Predoctoral Program (Master’s Program) and to play leading roles in various fields of society in the future.

Students are selected using a variety of methods that can evaluate the above requirements. As a characteristic entrant selection, we will have entrance examinations for recommended working adults and international students.
