Conducting leading-edge research in the Life Sciences.

In recent years, Life Science has become one of the most advancing fields of science. Not only has it been contributing to resolving the essential question concerning nature: the occurrence and the maintenance of life, it is also leading to discovering the causes of diseases, contributing to medical care, and resolving food/environmental issues. Further advances in Life Science hold immense implications for all nations due to its significant contributions to the welfare of humanity, to conservation and improvement of the global environment, and even to economic development.
Due to this progress by Life Science, greater expectations are being placed on the people who will lead this field. Future leaders will be expected to possess a global perspective, hold a proper sense of ethics as well as have an extremely advanced level of specialized knowledge and skills in their field. In response to this call from our modern society, the Division of Life Sciences at KSU aims to foster engineers and researchers who have advanced knowledge and who can fulfill the roles expected by future leaders in their specialized field.

Life Sciences Course Graduate Program Description

Productive Education Environment

The Division has 29 faculty members and provides small class education. Our faculty members’ specialized fields widely vary and students are able to conduct their research of interest. Our faculty members collaborate in their research, providing students with a wide range of knowledge and experiment skills. Furthermore we offer special courses, broadening student’s knowledge in the field.

Leading−edge Research Environment

Our graduate students are able to conduct advanced research supervised by the faculty members who are distinguished scholars and actively contribute to an academic society. Our research facility is well-equipped with a wide range of experiments, from molecules to individuals. We often invite outside researchers and organize seminars, providing our students with rich exposure to the leading−edge research.

Research Field

The educational program at the Division of Life Sciences is comprised of the following three courses.

Molecular Biosciences Course

Systematic research on systems that integrate the basic concepts of biology

Students gain a solid understanding of biomolecular functions primarily at the cellular and organizational levels to comprehend life as a unified system. They also learn to see illnesses as system breakdowns in order to research causes, methods of treatment, and other aspects.

Bioresource and Environmental Sciences Course

Research on the interface between life and the environment focusing on genomes and the global environment

Students learn to analyze life sciences from a macro perspective that includes genetics, bionomics, and bioenvironmental sciences, addressing both plant and animal studies. Research is conducted on bioresource utilization strategies that include breeding and resource development.

Animal Medical Sciences Course

Research on the physiology and pathology of humans and animals grounded in the basic life sciences

Studying primarily microorganisms and model organisms at the organism level, infectious diseases such as diseases transmissible from animals to humans or vice versa (zoonosis) are elucidated and research is conducted on various topics, such as safety in living environments and the development of pharmaceuticals.
