Social Goal Orientation (Motivation); Language Testing Anxiety
I was born and raised in the United States in a Chinese-American family and since birth have been surrounded by multiple dialects and languages. Before coming to Japan I worked with “generation 1.5” students who spoke both English and the native language of their immigrant parents, but who were not fully literate in either language. From this experience I developed an interest in the influence of social group affinity and social goal orientation on academic achievement. Although learning English in a different context and for different purposes, Japanese learners of English are influenced by similar motivational orientations. I am interested in researching the influence of social goals on academic achievement and language learning. I am also interested in the influence of anxiety, in particular test anxiety, on achievement and language learning.
Speaking a language is a social act and LEARNING a language is one as well. Language learning can be more effective and more interesting when it is used socially to communicate meaningful ideas to people we care about. So if you want to improve your English and enjoy yourself while doing so , strengthen your peer networks and find groups of like-minded friends who you can share the experience of learning English with.
