From a young age I have been interested in travelling and foreign cultures. As a result, I became interested in languages and how language are learned. This lead me into the field of second language acquisition and individual differences in language learning. I have lived in Germany, Taiwan, and Japan, and spent a lot of time in other countries as well. I still enjoy travelling to new places, meeting new people, learning about new cultures, eating and cooking new foods, and spending as much time outdoors as possible.

“ICT use at the university level: a cross-cultural comparison of teacher and student use of digital technology“
The research in question is a study of Japanese student and teacher use of information and communication technology (ICT) at the university level. Using the framework of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), students and teachers at a number of universities in Japan and abroad will be asked about ICT use for educational purposes. Being a longitudinal study, changes in technology and ICT use over time will be analyzed, and the patterns that emerge will be compared with patterns found in previous studies.

I am active in a number of international research groups, present at international conferences (GloCALL, CALL, and JALT TBLT), and am on the editorial board of the CALL Journal. In addition to my interest in computer assisted language learning, I am conducting research on the effects of study abroad on learning motivation and attitudes towards internationalization.

In our seminar we look at the intersection of language and culture, comparing cultural behavior and values to explore patterns of behavior and communication.

Being a university student is very different from being a student in High School. Suddenly you can make many of your own decisions and are free to do almost anything you like. University can be a great time of exploration and discovery. You can experience a lot of new things and learn about many others. But the greatest thing about university life is that this is your first great chance to understand yourself and create a new you, based on that understanding. I hope you find the journey as interesting as I did.
