「Looks Aren't Everything: What Nematode Sperm Are Teaching Us About Fertilization」

I will talk about C. elegans reproductive biology and the special advantages for recovering mutants that affect spermatogenesis. I will then turn attention to discussing the types of mutants that can be identified and transition into the spe-9 class. In the spe-9 class, I will very briefly mention spe-45/Izumo and spe-42 and transition into some interesting results we have obtained with fer-14, the newest (but really kind of old and been around for awhile) spe-9 class mutant.
There will be some surprising molecular biology because fer-14 uses unusual splicing. We have used CRISPR to engineer fer-14 with GFP on the C terminal end and have been able to localize the protein using immunofluorescence. Then, I hope to spend some time talk ing about some really new directions. We have some promising new data on worm ovulation mutants that might serve as suitable oocyte donors for in vitro fertilization.
