CENTRAL LIBRARY

Established in 1987, our university library collects and provides a diverse variety of publications and documents in order to support education and research by students and teachers. The library collection has now grown to about a million volumes, which is an essential resource for educational and research activities along with electronic journals and contracted databases. In recent years, the library has opened its resources and facilities to the public to help them in their life-long learning programs.

The library is a three-storied building with a two-storied basement. There is an audio-visual section on the first floor, a cultural sciences reading room on the second floor, a social and natural sciences reading room on the third floor, and in the basement stock room there are Japanese and foreign reference books together with back issues of magazines. Computers for book and information searches are located on every floor, and 56 PCs, each with an Internet connection, are available for use in a PC room.

The library system

The library is managed and controlled by an integrated system which rapidly provides services, such as registering, cataloguing, searching, lending, returning, reserving of books, and interlibrary access. In addition, users are able to renew the return date, reserve a book, and apply for interlibrary access from outside the library through the library Web service.

Services to the students

One of the important aims of the library is to support students' independent study. For that purpose, we have a section for reference books and designated books related to students' classes, a section for faculty members' writings, and a section for career and qualification tests so that students can use them according to their specific purposes. There is also a section where many publications about Kyoto are kept in order that students can learn more about the culture of the city. Additionally, there is a system for students to register a book they want us to purchase, which many students are utilizing.

Library education

One of the characteristics of the library's activities is to encourage students and teachers to actively use the library. In particular, the program for new students is part of the education of information literacy, which cultivates the ability to utilize information as a useful tool after graduation.

Establishment of the Library Book Review Award

In order to raise students' interest in reading and use of libraries, a Library Book Review Award was established for which students are encouraged to enter book reviews.Central Library
