Research Overview

One of the most pronounced characteristics of Galileo Galilei's prose is the way it skillfully draws readers in, involves them in the discussion and eventually convincing them of the writer's point. These "techniques of persuasion" were built up over the course of countless academic controversies on subjects ranging from physics to astronomy (including controversies over Biblical interpretation), and underwent a major shift between two of his works, The Assayer and Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems. My present work is concerned with clarifying the following points,among others: How exactly did Galileo hone his "techniques of persuasion" through numerous real-life debates, and what are the characteristics of these techniques? What kind of changes took place when he switched to a back-and-forth conversational format,and what background lay behind these changes? How should we view his "techniques of persuasion" in terms of the Italian language of the time, particularly regarding its relationship to the Baroque? Is there a connection between the abovementioned shift in Galileo's method and the growth of the Baroque? This research deals not only with Galileo's field of natural science, but also with Baroque poets such as Marino and theorists of Baroque literature such as Tesauro.

  1. 「バロック期の感覚主義と「ナイチンゲール」をめぐる考察―ガリレオ、カンパネッラ、マリーノ、ゴンゴラを対象にしてー」、2018年、『天野惠先生退職記念論文集』、京都大学文学部イタリア語学イタリア文学研究室発行。17世紀のイタリアの自然哲学者や詩人に共通して見られる感覚主義についての考察とマリーノとゴンゴラの詩の比較を行なった。
  2. L’infinito di Galileo, in Ricerche, scoperta, invenzione: l'Italia dei saperi, Istituto Italiano di Cultura-Tokyo, 2014. ガリレオの無限に関する思考とイタリア詩における英雄ガリレオの取り扱いについて考察した。
  3. La lingua di Galileo, in L'italiano tra scienza, arte e tecnologia, Istituto Italiano di Cultura-Tokyo, 2010. ガリレオの科学的散文の持っている特徴を文体や語彙など様々なレベルから分析した。
  4. 「ガリレオのルッヅァンテ体験」、1999年、《日伊文化研究》第37号、日伊協会発行。ガリレオと劇作家ルッヅァンテの関係について論じることで、彼の言語表現と言語思想の形成過程の一端を明らかにした。
