My research in molecular ecology examines social insects that demonstrate a high level of sociability such as honeybees, bumblebees, and hornets and aims to understand the molecular mechanisms related to the social behavior and evolution of animals. I am closely examining the influence that the colony’s kin-structure and the genetic structure of individual organisms has on the altruistic behavior of non-breeding organisms (workers), and am analyzing behavior-controlling genes such as those that control altruistic behavior and care of off spring. Furthermore, in order to promote the functional application of the useful insects honeybees and bumblebees in the fi elds of agricultural and environmental conservation, I am trying, through DNA breeding, to develop new strains, including a large-honey-yield strain, an immune-to-pathogenicmicroorganisms strain, and a non-stinging strain with the knowledge acquired through basic research in ethology, genetics, and ecology as a base. My bumblebee research involves researching the establishment of breeding techniques that will enable domestic species to be used as pollinators in greenhouses. Another part of my research involves carrying out ecological surveys of wild species, and examining individual organisms bred in zoos and aquariums to analyze genes that cause hereditary disorders.
