CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIETY AT THE FOREFRONT OF ACADEMIA

The primary mission of the Graduate School is not only to produce scholars but also to develop highly skilled professionals. In our Master's courses and the first half of Doctoral courses, students receive extensive one-on-one guidance both in their specialized field and related fields to acquire expertise and the methodological skills to enable them to conduct state-of-the-art research. The second half of our Doctoral courses places emphasis on creating one's own study methods to become an independent researcher. To accomplish this, we have professors of established reputation who provide high-level instruction in each field. Along with this education, including research instruction, a teaching assistant system is in place, under which graduate students who have financial difficulties may receive a scholarship for undertaking faculty support tasks. At the same time, we have various types of entrance examination systems in order to accept adult students and foreign students.

Economics

Producing highly specialized professionals and researchers who are able to analyze and examine economic issues and propose accurate solutions

Unique features of the division

The Division of Economics has been undertaking advanced research such as experimental economics, and the ORC Chinese Economy Project. In 2007, a book titled "Development of Experimental Economics" was published by a German publisher. Regarding the "ORC Chinese Economy Project", a series of eight special lecture courses on the Chinese economy were started and gained great popularity.

In the Doctoral course of the Division of Economics, faculty members have a wide range of specialized knowledge regarding Japan and other countries, and give instructions and guidance to students, responding to the various needs of each student based on their interests and concerns. We also offer fundamental courses in economics (microeconomics and macroeconomics) to accept students not only from the Faculty of Economics, but also students from other faculties, as well as those from the workforce.

Economics (Correspondence Education Course)

Providing working students with an opportunity to study economic policy and practical policy-making while continuing to pursue their careers

Establishment of the Correspondence Education Course in the Division of Economics
In April 2007, the Division of Economics (Correspondence Education Course) was established for the first time in Japan to offer a master's degree in economics through correspondence education. Target students are business people who have at least two years' work experience, or those working in the government, public offices, education and research institutions who are concerned about the current system and have a clear agenda for solving the problems.

Educational contents and systems
In the Division of Economics (Correspondence Education Course), we offer cross-curricular subjects related to economic policy which are necessary to analyze and research the actual economy. Students are able to choose a seminar tailored to their research themes, from Small Businesses, Agriculture, Labor, Environment, Finance, Public Economy, International Economy, International Finance and Economic Systems, and receive one-on-one guidance for two years.

Management

Re-organizing the research areas in response to the need of the times

Unique features of the division

The aim of this division is to develop individuals with knowledge in specialized fields and skills necessary in top management in a diversity of organizations, beginning with enterprises. To attain these goals, we have developed an elaborate curriculum which, in addition to core courses in Strategy and Structure, Social Management, Accounting and Finance, provides students with a broad historic and systematic perspective in their approach to management.

A course on Corporate Communication is also offered for students intending to acquire knowledge in this field. As courses on the fundamentals of management are offered, it is not necessary for students to have knowledge of management prior to entering this division.

The Law School was established in 2004 at Kyoto Sangyo University, focusing on producing competent legal professionals. The Division of Law, on the other hand, continues to undertake an important role in the fostering of highly specialized professionals, including researchers, in law and politics.

The research area of the Division of Law is divided into law and politics. Law research covers positive laws such as civil, commercial and tax laws, and laws governing international trade in the US, EU and Asia, as well as international laws regarding peace and war. Political research includes area studies in Russia, Germany, France, India, etc., international politics, political history, and theory of public policy.Students who earn 110 credits by the end of the third year at university can advance to the first semester of the graduate school if they pass the entrance examination. Furthermore, if such students complete a master's thesis during the first year at graduate school, they will be able to earn a master's degree at the earliest in four years (three years at university and one year at graduate school). To admit adult students, we conduct an oral examination based on students' research planning document and their statement of purpose.

Foreign Languages

In 2008, the English course reorganized its curriculum and introduced more practical subjects to meet the needs of students' career formation. At the same time, an overseas English education seminar was established in order to enhance students' motivation.

The Division of Foreign Languages comprises three specialist courses: English, Chinese, and linguistics. Each course provides students with intensive one-on-one instruction.

The English course also focuses on "recurrent education", not only for students who wish to enter the fields of teaching, trading, tourism, and international exchange, but also for active teachers aiming to acquire a specialized certificate in teaching English. All classes are given mainly in English in order to enhance students' ability to utilize English and deepen their understanding of the culture of English-speaking countries.

The Chinese course is divided into Chinese language and Chinese literature. Chinese language includes the study of local dialects in China and contemporary Chinese grammar. In Chinese literature, students study modern and contemporary Chinese literature and compare the cultures between China and Japan, as well as the history and culture of China.

In the linguistics course, students learn general theories and principles of linguistics, methodologies of linguistic study, as well as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of the target language. They also examine areas related to the language such as the society, psychology, race, and culture of that language.

Science

Contributing to Society through Education and Research of Mathematics and Physics

Unique features of the division

The purpose of science is to search for the truth underlying natural phenomena. The search results lead to the development of new technologies. The Division of Science consists of mathematics and physics. The mathematics course includes computer science. In addition, a faculty member specializing in applied analysis joined the mathematics course in 2008, further responding to a wide range of research themes that students wish to study.

The mathematics course allows students to conduct research in diverse areas of contemporary mathematics, from traditional pure mathematics to applied mathematics. Most of the students who complete the mathematics course enter the teaching profession, but in recent years more students have taken a position at general companies outside the education sector.

The physics course includes astrophysics and environmental science in addition to traditional physics such as elementary particle and solid-state properties. This course is also collaborating with the Research Center for Light Photons. A number of graduated students are engaged in research and development, as well as technology.

Engineering

Implementing leading-edge research, such as avian influenza and symbiotic robot

Unique features of the division

The Division of Engineering is well equipped with research equipment, such as experimental apparatus and instruments, and has an abundant research budget, which includes expenses for supplies. The skilled instructors give detailed guidance to each student and their research theme, taking into account their future career goals.

Students have frequent opportunities to make presentations regarding their research results at academic conferences. They are required to make careful and thorough preparations in order to be able to answer pertinent questions from research colleagues. Such experiences will greatly benefit them when they make presentations as an engineer during their professional careers. At the same time, a presentation at an academic conference allows students to recognize objective evaluation of their research results, as well as the social rank of the results.
