CULTIVATING "OUTSTANDING HOMO OECONOMICUS" WITH A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Japanese society is currently undergoing rapid socioeconomic changes due to globalization, low birth rate, aging population and an ever-widening gap between rich and poor. And behind these changes lie economic forces and their interacting movements.

In anticipation of future trends in Japanese society, our faculty aims to produce "Outstanding Homo oeconomicus" with well-rounded personalities, who are able to look at current issues from a global perspective, and make unerring and comprehensive judgements supported by sound economic thinking and abundant knowledge of economics.

During the first year, students receive an intensive programme to learn the foundation of economics in the weekly lectures of "Introductory Economics" to be supplemented by small class work of "Introductory Seminars." These courses are supplemented by "E-learning," the IT materials independently developed by our faculty. In the autumn semester of the second year, students choose a specialised course from Public Policies, Industrial Economics and International Economics, in order to pursue the economic investigation into topics of their own interests and career goals.

Small-class Education

Following "Introductory Seminars" in the first year, the small class learning continues and "The Seminars I~IV" starts in the autumn of the second year. Here students choose a particular field of economics according to their interests and join the small and intensive class teaching. They learn the expertise knowledge though investigation, and logical thinking and communication skills through presentations and discussions. Today, we are happy to learn that more and more of our students actively participate in fieldwork and debates outside the classroom seminars.

Cultivating the ability to cope with globalization and IT advancement

For globalization, we offer a number of subjects and courses in international economics, analyses of world's regional economies, readings of economic materials in foreign languages, and economics taught in English. As for IT advancement, students can improve their information processing skills though "Economic Data Processing" and Economic Statistics."

Interdisciplinary curriculum with postgraduate study as future option

Students may study a wide variety of subjects outside of Faculty of Economics to satisfy their academic interests if they extend over the field of economics. For those wishing to investigate further, there is the Graduate School of Economics that offers Master and Doctor Degrees in Economics.
