New Possibilities for Language Learning
In the field of language education, where we have adopted progressive approaches, a new teaching style has been established which fully incorporates computers, enabling both students and teachers to communicate in groups or individually.
(1) Bi-directional Education
In a conventional language lab students are taught in a uni-directional manner with the instructor specifying the media (audio and video) to be utilized. In contrast, in the new CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) facilities, both the instructor and the students are provided with computers, making bi-directional communication possible.
(2) Self-paced Learning, Using All Five Senses
The introduction of a high-speed network communication system enables instructors to communicate with students and students with other students by means of audio, still images and movies, in addition to text data.
Large-scale utilization of computers achieves language learning more closely tailored to each individual student's level of understanding and learning speed.
(3) Independent Studying via the Internet
The Internet provides the student with an avenue for "language learning on the world stage". Eventually, the student will be able to assemble his or her own "textbook" from texts drawn from foreign language Web sites in the learner's own areas of interest, communicate with people overseas by e-mail, or create personal Web pages in foreign languages.
Human Communication
Although language learning is originally based on interpersonal communication, computer networks are an effective means for spurring interest in language learning. We value the longstanding educational belief in creating human communication between teachers and students, and between students themselves an employ state-of-the-technology to accomplish this.
