講演要旨
Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has a significant effect on lung development and growth. ETS has significant impacts in early life to influence lung metabolism, airway innervation and reactivity, as well as a wide variety of neuroendocrine functions.The importance of cell signaling controls such as NF-κB can be significantly affected by ETS to modify the regulation of cellular maturation, differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis. Exposure to ETS in early life could have many persistent effects throughout life.

講演要旨
The design of the respiratory system is critical to allow for the exchange of gases between the host and its environment, while also protecting against gases, vapors and particles that might harm this delicate system. The immense surface area formed by the alveoli of the lungs with a close interface with a vast blood capillary bed allows for efficient exchange of gases for the oxidation of carbon containing compounds which require oxygen and result in available energy and carbon dioxide. This seminar will cover the basic principles of respiratory structure and function and potential causes for injury to this system, as well as those mechanisms that serve to protect the lungs.
